CONCORD READS  2010

Concord Reads is a one book, one community reading program which brings people together by encouraging them to read and participate in discussions and other events about the same book.  The Concord Reads Committee is made up of Concord Public Library Foundation members, library staff, staff from the Concord Monitor and other interested community members.

For 2010, the Concord Reads committee has chosen to read two books by Firoozeh Dumas, Funny in Farsi and Laughing Without an Accent.  Both books are collections of short humorous stories.  The first relates the experiences of an Iranian girl growing up in America and living within two cultures.  The second title explores her experiences as a “global citizen,” an Iranian born American married to a Frenchman, as well as her experiences returning to her homeland.  Each, in its way, illustrates the immigrant experience and our common humanity.  Dumas’s family is a collection of characters, but then isn’t every family?

Multiple copies of the book are available at the library for Concord library cardholders to check out.  The books are available in paperback and can also be purchased at your local bookstore.  Programming in the fall will relate to the experience of immigrants. After all, we are all immigrants of one generation or another.
