National Public Works Week

APWA NPWW 2015 Poster

The American Public Works Association sponsors National Public Works Week (NPWW) in the third full week of May to celebrate the importance of public works services. This year, Public Works Week will occur from May 17th to May 23rd. For the City of Concord, public works services are performed by the General Services Department. Concord General Services provides street maintenance, water treatment and distribution, wastewater treatment, trash/recycling services, public properties maintenance, and equipment services for City vehicles. Public works services affect our lives each and every day. We have grown accustomed to having clean, accessible water every time we turn on the faucet; we expect to have solid waste services dispose of our trash and recycling items; we rely on properly maintained streets for safe transportation. Maintaining water mains, cleaning up storm debris, and plowing snow during the winter are all a result of dedicated public works employees. The City of Concord highly encourages the Concord community to learn more about the public works services provided and to thank all public works professionals this week for their continued service.

Street Maintenance
Road maintenance and repair are significant responsibilities of the Highways and Utilities Division of General Services. Potholes, existing signs, sidewalks, water distribution lines, sewer collection, winter operations, dead animal removal, fall leaf collection, and the Sustainable Tree Program are all responsibilities of the Highways and Utilities Division. Spring load limits are currently posted through April and hydrant flushing will be occurring for the next few weeks. Street lights are maintained by Unitil and traffic lights are maintained by Concord Fire Department.

Trash & Recycling
The City of Concord currently contracts with Casella for all trash and recycling services. Visit the trash and recycling page for more information on our pay-as-you-throw program, single-stream recycling, household hazardous waste disposal, solid waste management, trash holidays, and for the route map

Our Water Treatment Plant operates to deliver superior drinking water from Penacook Lake. The utility billing division generates and distributes invoices to the users of the city's water and sewer lines. The water and sewer utilities are fully supported through user charges.

Wastewater Treatment & Sewer Collection
Our Wastewater Treatment Division and Highway and Utilities Division provide services for the collection and treatment of wastewater for Concord and portions of Bow and Boscawen.

The city's ice arena is the Douglas N. Everett Arena located at 15 Loudon Road in Concord. The Everett Arena is the home of Concord Youth Hockey, Concord High Boy's and Girl's Hockey, Bishop Brady Boy's and Girl's Hockey, and Bow High School Boy's Hockey. It is also open for public skate during scheduled times.
